4 Signs It’s Time for a New Toothbrush

December 12, 2022

You know your toothbrush is an integral part of maintaining your oral hygiene. But did you know it must be replaced regularly? If you keep using the same toothbrush for too long, it won’t be as effective at keeping your teeth healthy and clean. At Charlotte Progressive Dentistry, we want to help our North Carolina patients take the best care of their teeth possible, so read as we share four signs it’s time for a new toothbrush.

Worn Bristles

The bristles of your toothbrush scrub away plaque and food debris, but over time, frequent use wears them down. As a result, the bristles become frayed and less effective at brushing. If your toothbrush appears worn down, consider replacing it as soon as possible!

When you start using a fresh toothbrush, the bristles are typically white or colored. But if you’ve noticed the bristles are discolored or stained, that’s a clear indication that it’s time to get a new toothbrush. Stained toothbrushes can’t clean as well.

Noticeable Odor

Your toothbrush helps clear bacteria out of your mouth, but eventually, that bacteria gets left behind on the bristles. When this happens, your toothbrush may develop a noticeable odor, reducing its effectiveness in cleaning your teeth. If your toothbrush has a bad smell, replace it right away!

Older Than Three Months

Can you remember the last time you got a new toothbrush? If not, it’s probably time to do so now. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months, regardless of any signs of wear and tear. By replacing your toothbrush regularly, you won’t have to worry about how well it’s cleaning your teeth.

By looking for these signs, you can make sure your toothbrush is always in good condition. If you’re unsure whether your toothbrush has been cleaning your teeth properly, visit Charlotte Progressive Dentistry to schedule a routine dental exam.
